Bula.
This weekend, we visited Nadi Market on a Saturday for the first time in a while.
We usually stop by on weekdays, but this weekend felt especially lively. With the nearby Bula Festival taking place, the market was filled with more locals, families, and visitors than usual.
As always, the stalls were overflowing with fresh vegetables and tropical fruits.
Many of the fruits and vegetables sold at Fiji’s local markets are grown with little or no use of pesticides.
Because of this, the produce isn’t always perfectly shaped.
The variety, size, and quality can also change depending on the season and the weather.
In many ways, that’s simply how nature works.
Before moving to Fiji, I was used to buying neatly arranged, perfectly uniform vegetables from supermarkets.
Now, seeing vegetables with a little soil still on them or produce that comes in different shapes and sizes brings me a different kind of joy. It feels more connected to the land and reminds me that every harvest is unique.
One of the pleasures of visiting the market is discovering what is in season each week.
Using the daikon we picked up at the market—a seasonal winter vegetable in Fiji—we’ve also created a tropical-inspired recipe. We hope you’ll enjoy trying it, too.

We’ve also shared a short YouTube video from our Saturday visit.
