Impact of TC Vaianu in Fiji|A Local Perspective from the Western Region

Tropical Cyclone Vaianu was classified as a Category 3 storm, making it the strongest cyclone I have personally experienced in Fiji so far.

Although it did not make landfall, its impact was clearly felt across the western region.

In my area, there was no flooding, but we experienced strong winds and heavy rain, along with power outages.
Without electricity, it became difficult to charge phones, and many electronic devices were unusable.

Due to the Easter holiday period, schools in the western region remained closed not only on Monday but also from Tuesday through Friday.
Even now, some areas are still without electricity and water.

In lower-lying areas, flooding has occurred, highlighting how the impact of the cyclone varies depending on location.

When I visited the supermarket the day after the rain eased, many items were already out of stock.
Fresh vegetables in particular were scarce, showing clear signs of disruption to supply chains.

Around town, fallen trees, damaged signs, and scattered branches and leaves were visible, reflecting the strength of the storm.

Even without making landfall, this cyclone had a significant impact on daily life and infrastructure.

Living in Fiji, I was once again reminded of the scale of tropical cyclones.
Even without a direct hit, the level of impact made it clear just how powerful this system was.
